What Cheese Pairs With Avocado?

At a first glance, avocado and cheese may seem like an unlikely pairing, however, when you start to think of grilled sandwiches, or the ultimate brunch feast, cheese sounds like an ideal addition, add some great flavours and bring together a variety of different textures. In this article, we look at what cheese pairs best with avocado.

What Cheese Pairs with Avocado?

Cheese and avocado are a great pairing. Depending on the type of dish you are creating, a hot avocado dish will likely require a cheese that is good for melting.

Alternatively, using avocado in a cold dish such as a salad will require a light, fresh and zesty cheese. The best cheese to put with your avocado will be mild in flavour, but also a little sweet or salty to cut through the creamy richness of the avocado.

Top 4 Cheeses to Pair with Avocado are:

  • Aged cheddar

Cheese for Hot Avocado Dishes:

An aged cheddar will be best used when making a grilled cheese and avocado sandwich. Aged cheddars are matured for approximately 12 months, and have a sharp, bitey and salty flavour. Made with cows milk, aged cheddars have a buttery texture and on the surface appear rich, however, the stronger flavour will be undercut by the fattiness of the avocado.

Something for a Little Indulgence:

Another cheese that is great for melting but will provide a little more indulgence is Brie. Produced in one of the four Brie regions in the Il de France, Brie is a popular, savoury cheese that can be enjoyed in a variety of different ways.

Adding Brie to your grilled avocado sandwich provides a rich, luxurious treat, as well as to enjoy the earthy, mushroom and slightly spicy flavours, coming together with the earthy flavours of avocado.

Cheese for Cold Avocado Dishes:

Goats Chevre is a great light fresh cheese to add to an avocado salad. It is fresh goats cheese, matured no longer than a couple of weeks. This light cheese is creamy and citrus-like in flavour. It will be perfect to crumble through a salad and therefore cut through the fat of the avocado with its mild acidity.

To Try Something Different:

To try a cheese that is a little different and unique, look no further than burrata. Similar to goats chevre, burrata is also fresh cheese, however, it is made with a combination of cow and buffalo milk. It has a much smoother, creamier texture than goats chevre. Burrata is light, sweet and best served at room temperature. Add to your salad for a refreshing addition to break through the rich avocado.

Tip:

There are several other great kinds of cheese that can be matched with avocado. Consider cheeses that are mild, acidic and will not overpower the earthy flavour of the avocado.
