McDonald’s. The ever-popular fast-food chain that is located all around the world. There has always been debate over the products they use, where they are sourced, as well as some outrageous rumours as to what is put into their nuggets and burgers. However, in this article, we will be looking at what cheese does McDonald’s use, as well as a similar substitute you can use at home.
What Cheese does McDonalds use?
McDonald’s has their cheese specifically made for them. It is a form of processed cheddar. This can be equated to the rough equation of 60% cheese, and 40% other ingredients. The cheese used is suitable for vegetarians, however as it does contain dairy it is not suitable for vegans. Other ingredients used are: Water, Whey Powder, Butter, Emulsifying salts, Milk Proteins, Salt, Food colouring and Natural Cheese Flavouring.
The key ingredients used in the creation of processed cheese is a blend of cheddar (or other cheese variants, water and salt).
Of course, some of these will vary slightly depending on which country you eat your McDonalds and where it is produced, due to the large proportions of cheese produced each year, (5 million kilograms in Australia alone – Source)
Where to Buy McDonalds Cheese:
McDonald’s will have their own suppliers and have the cheese made for them. Therefore, you cannot purchase it directly from the supermarket shelves. However, there are sure to be some very similar equivalents out there.
To search for the most comparable cheese to McDonald’s’, firstly, you need to look for processed cheese. This is not going to be your artisanal cheddar or most expensive product, so move away from the fromageries and delis and stick to the good old supermarket dairy shelves!
McDonald’s cheese as we know comes in slices. These can be purchased pre-sliced and often come in boxes of say 10-20 slices. Look for something along the lines of ‘burger cheese’. Brands such as Kraft cheese are the closest you will get to McDonalds style cheese.

Tip:
The cheese slices come with sheets of plastic in between to prevent slices from sticking to one another, please remove them before consumption!
